Martin Mooney is our very own Local Legend

We’re delighted to announce that our volunteer Martin has been recognised by the Health Lottery as a Local Legend! The Health Lottery supported our volunteering programme with a wee grant last year, so it’s wonderful to read that Martin was one of 6 volunteers selected as an unsung hero.

Martin joined Bike for Good in 2013 and in that time he has volunteered in excess of 3,000 hours! Our volunteer coordinator, Liz, says:

“Martin’s level of commitment is steadfast. He performs the most unglamorous of roles, he sweeps, packs inner tubes for recycling and a variety of odd jobs required by our mechanics. He humbly undertakes tasks that fly quietly under the radar but make no mistake, Martin is the heart of our team. He is integral to the smooth running of our workshops, full of bikes that are constantly being stripped or re-built.

Martin is an incredible cyclist himself, he has faced a number of personal challenges in life, mental and physical. He is reliable, rigorous and resilient; he never gives up and we are so grateful.

His contribution in the background helps us deliver important services to the public: cycling lessons, access to bikes and teaching mechanical skills. Over the last decade, there has been a marked increase in the number of people cycling in Glasgow. Martin deserves to take pride in that achievement alongside our cycle trainers and mechanics; he is a critical part of the team, serving (almost invisibly) the local community with dedication and diligence.”

It is clear that Martin is a true Local Legend and we are delighted to share his achievements with you. Thank you Martin.
