At Bike for Good, we offer both professional workshop servicing and friendly drop-in sessions where you can learn to fix your own bike. Whether you’d like our experienced mechanics to take care of the repairs or want to build the skills to do it yourself, we’re here to help keep you safely on the road.

Assessment

Before carrying out any servicing or significant repairs, our mechanics will assess your bike and provide an estimate for the work required. This helps ensure you receive an accurate quote and can make an informed decision before any work begins.

Workshop FAQs

What if there are no appointments available?

If there are no appointments available on the calendar, this means we are fully booked. This is common in the spring/summer months. We only take bookings up to 4 weeks in advance. Please check back in regularly as new appointment slots are automatically added each week.

Do you accept walk-in repairs?

If you require a simple repair such as a puncture, we will always do our best to do these as ‘walk in jobs’. If you’re unsure if what you require falls into the scope of a ’walk in’ job, then it’s best if you give us a call before dropping by. We cannot guarantee that we can turn these repairs around immediately, and our mechanics/staff may ask you to book an assessment if the work required is more complex.

How much do repairs cost?

These are based on our standard workshop labour rate (£40/hour), and may vary depending on the complexity of the repair or part being replaced. Some common examples include:

  • Puncture/tube replacement – from £7
  • Cable adjustment (per cable) – from £10
  • Bottom bracket replacement – from £20
  • Headset replacement – from £20
  • Hub servicing – from £30
  • Wheel truing – from £10
  • Spoke replacement – from £15
Do you repair e-bikes?

Yes, we undertake e-bike repairs on an ad-hoc basis, however e-bike repairs cannot be booked through our standard repair booking system. All e-bike customers must contact the Workshop Manager directly before arranging a booking.

We work with Shimano and Bosch systems primarily. Please refer to our E-Bike Policy for details of the services we offer, supported systems, and any exclusions that may apply.

What happens at an assessment appointment?

A mechanic will chat with you to understand the issues you are experiencing. They will then carry out an initial assessment and provide an estimate for the work required. Once you have given us the go-ahead, they will provide an estimated turnaround time.

Is the estimate quote fixed?

Not always. Some issues only become apparent once work begins, for example seized bolts, worn internal components etc. If additional work is required, we’ll contact you with any changes to the quote before proceeding with the work.

Can I drop my bike off earlier than the appointment?

For efficiency, we would always prefer to have you present for the bike assessment, firstly to ensure any issues you might have with the bike are communicated, but also to allow the mechanic to run you through any work required. Not having you present will generally slow the turnaround time. We appreciate many people work 9-5pm, so if you need to drop your bike off earlier, email to let us know and be as descriptive in the booking notes as you can.

Can you provide an estimate without seeing the bike?

We cannot provide accurate quotes without first assessing the bike in person. Many symptoms can have multiple causes, and bikes use a wide range of component standards, parts, and compatibility systems. What appears to be a simple issue may require anything from a minor adjustment to replacement parts. An in-person assessment allows us to identify the root cause of the problem and provide the most accurate estimate possible.

How long will my repair take?

Most repairs are completed within one week, though this can vary depending on workshop demand, staffing levels, and parts availability. In the busier summer months, turn around times will usually always be longer.

Can I supply my own parts?

In most cases, yes. However, we cannot guarantee compatibility of the parts you purchase elsewhere or offer a warranty on parts supplied by customers.

How often should I service my bike?

For most riders, every 6–12 months is a good starting point. Frequent riders, commuters, and mountain bikers may benefit from more regular servicing and preventative maintenance such as chain replacements, brake pad replacements etc.

FYOB FAQs

Your bike, clothing that you wouldn’t mind getting dirty, yourself, and the motivation to get stuck in! We provide a stand, tools, and consumables/parts. Parts can be bought from our shop and we have a wide range of new and used components at excellent prices.

Participants may bring their own parts, subject to approval by staff running the session. Parts can be bought from our shop and we have a wide range of new and used components at excellent prices.
